What Are The Differences Between The Two Parties Today: Module 3 Perusal Discussion:
The major difference between the Republican and Democratic Parties is in the areas where they have put more emphasis. Democrats believe in community and social responsibility, whereby every member of society is believed to have a significant and direct role in the socioeconomic wellbeing of society. On the other hand, Republicans believe in individual rights and justice, whereby every person bears the consequences of their actions, and social phenomena are seen from an individual perspective instead of a collective one. This significant difference explains the difference in approaches towards taxation and other economic ideas. Democrats believe in minimum wages and progressive taxation so that people are taxed depending on their earnings. On the other hand, Republicans believe that taxes should be applied equally irrespective of one’s earnings and that wages should be set depending on the conditions and decisions of the free market.
I do not feel represented in the presidential elections. This is because the elections focus on Democratic or Republican ideologies and representatives and ignore other participants who might have different but more refreshing approaches. Democratic and Republican ideologies are extreme, and therefore I would feel more represented if another representative who picks the positive aspects of the two major parties would be considered. For example, if a political party that equally addressed individual well-being and responsibility and communal outcomes were considered, it would result in a situation where individual members of society would form the most important foundation of society, whereby their well-being would be reflected in the exceptional outcomes and performance of the society as a whole.
People keep voting Republican or Democrat due to fear of unknown parties. People tend to lean more towards the known and shun the unknown, hence breeding a culture of close-mindedness and the increased likelihood of progressive and positive parties and ideologies being overlooked for the tried and tested ones considered safer.
Do the Landlord have the Right to Raise Rents and Take Advantage of the Unaffordability of Houses? Should the Government Intervene, Why or Why Not?
Sadly, landlords have the right to raise rents as they wish. This is because they own the properties and therefore they can decide on what they would want to do with their private property. The landlords’ lack of accountability has resulted in a situation whereby they have raised rents so high that the rates of homelessness have risen steadily. The government should intervene by setting laws and regulations regarding how much rent can be raised by landlords so that houses can become more affordable and the rates of homelessness can be reduced. Without this intervention, the quality of life will be negatively impacted, meaning that the government will have failed in its mandate to provide its citizens with safe and affordable housing.
