Introduction

Throughout history, philosophers have delved into the study of the mind and its influence on the body. Rene Desecrates was particularly interested in understanding the mind-body axis and the role of various organs involved. This French philosopher wrote two short papers on meditation in an attempt to depict his conception of the conscious and its difference from the subconscious. Similar ideas are observable in film and other popular media. In Inception (2010), the director highlights the role of the mind in creating a dream. In the film, he explicates how a dream represents the false perception of reality, displaying the impossible events that are only present in the subconscious. Descartes’ work and Inception (2010) represent the dream world as a vivid replica of real events. Descartes argues that the mind and the body allow you to know when one is dreaming and when one is awake.

Still finding challenges on how to structure a philosophy essay introduction? Well, an introduction is the deal-breaker in any college assignment. From my introduction and the subsequent sections provided in the draft, I am confident that  you will improve with time.

Inception (2010)

In the film, Dom Cobb, a character played by Leonardo DiCaprio, and his accomplice Arthur invade people’s minds to extract information for various reasons. To achieve this, Cobb must share in the victim's dreams world and live with them through their subconscious. Through various characters, like Ariadne, the viewer understands the exaggerated motifs and symbols that can only be found in the dreamland. Cobb once tells Ariadne that the difference between a dream and wakefulness is that a person can trace their steps up to a specific point in the latter, but not when they are dreaming (Thomas & Nolan, 2010). The film shares substantial facts about dreams and the mind with Descartes’ work, although the latter offers a more detailed account of what is reality and what is not.

Difference between Reality and Dreaming

According to Descartes, the state of the dream seems exaggerated, often displaying things that are not probable in the wakeful state. In his words, anything observable in a dream is existent in reality. Dreaming is, therefore, akin to creating art. An artist can only draw or curve an object usually available in reality (Stumpf & Fieser, 2015). Moreover, events in a dream are usually not clear as they look in the real world. For instance, Descartes cites that he is sure about writing his paper while awake because he can turn his head and hold a pen in his hand. However, he is, astonished by some clarity that exists in a dream, to a point that he thinks that some of his past real experiences were only a dream. Although Descartes seems to understand the dream-reality irreconcilable difference, he expressed desperation that man in his mortal body cannot fully comprehend such complex arrangement of the mind and the body. It is only God in his supreme providence that prevents his mind to deceive him whether he is awake or in a constant slumber (Stumpf & Fieser, 2015).

Conclusion

The perception of reality is dependent on the mind and the body. The mind can immerse a person into the dream world where events, structures, and characters are exaggerated. From both Descartes’ writings and Inception (2010), the dream world is surreal. Although the people, roads, cars, and other structures in the dream world resemble those in the physical reality, an individual’s perception and interaction with them is not as clear as in the wakeful state. The passage of time is faster than that in the real world, which makes it impossible for a dreamer to trace their timeline to a specific point or place.
